“I care about people,” says Ms. Powell, “and do my very best to provide excellent, confidential medical care.”
She earned her initial degree in graphic art, but during her first pregnancy the nurse midwifes impressed her so much that she decided to change careers. “I received excellent care from (them) and became very passionate about healthcare.”
So, she returned to college to become a nurse practitioner, a career that not only gave her the chance to provide direct patient care but also to teach at the college level and to conduct clinical research at the University of California at San Francisco.
“My patients like me, and I like them,” she says. “They find me comfortable to talk with, trust me, and know that I will advocate for them.”
Ms. Powell enjoys hiking, music and tending her garden. A speaker of limited clinical Spanish, she has volunteered to provide medical care in Latin America.
