Postoperative Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy Instructions

Avoid hot liquids. Drink only cool or warm fluids. Clear liquids only on the day of surgery. A full liquid, no chew diet for 7 days after surgery. Food may be blended and thinned.

Avoid salty or spicy foods. Avoid citrus or acidic juices.

Restrict activities to the house for the next 3-5 days. No extreme activities for the 2nd week. (No recess or PE.)

Drink fluids! 1-2 quarts in addition to food, every 24 hours.

ADULTS:
• No Ibuprofen (Advil), Naproxen (Aleve) or Aspirin as these anti-inflammatory pain relievers may affect bleeding.
• If you were given liquid narcotic pain medication, please follow the instructions on the bottle. Do not take additional acetaminophen liquid! The maximum dose of Acetaminophen for adults during the post-operative period is 4000mg per 24 hours. (Two 500 mg tabs every 6 hours.)

CHILDREN: Alternate between Children’s liquid acetaminophen (Tylenol) and liquid Ibuprofen (Advil) alternating every 3 hours. Example: Acetaminophen at noon and 6pm, Ibuprofen at 3 and 9 pm. Do not exceed the maximum dose as stated on the bottle. Follow the dosing on the packaging.

If your child was also prescribed liquid Acetaminophen with Codeine for breakthrough pain, substitute this for one of the regular Acetaminophen doses.

Throat pain will gradually improve over one week. Throat pain can be, and quite often is, felt in the ears and it should not alarm you. Pain in the ears may be constant, dull and aching, or can be sharp at times with swallowing. The pain is referred pain, from the soreness of the throat.

If you have been given an antibiotic or anti-nausea medicine, you may take this as directed.

WARNING SIGNS: Heavy bleeding from the mouth or nose. Fever, uncontrolled pain or nausea, or if something does not feel right, notify the ENT department.
