Postoperative Instructions Following Breast Surgery

1. Avoid strenuous activity for the next few days. It is normal to feel tired and run down after surgery.

2. You have either Dermabond or a clear plastic dressing over your incisions. You may shower with either and get it wet. After 5 days, you may remove the plastic dressing. If blood pools under the dressing and leaks out, you may remove it and replace it with dry gauze. It is ok to shower.

3. No soaking in a hot tub or swimming until we see you in the office.

4. It is not unusual to have swelling and bruising.

5. Applying an ice water pack to the breast may help; use it as much as you want.

6. Wear a supportive bra, even at night, for the first 7 days. It helps to roll up a thin sock and insert it over the incision to add gentle pressure. This will help to minimize swelling and discomfort.

7. You may return to your normal diet.

8. Pain medications tend to be constipating. Plan on taking your prescribed stool softener to avoid this problem.

9. If you have a drain, measure and record the output at least twice daily.

10. No driving while on narcotic pain medication, it is illegal.

11. Please call our office if you have any of the following:
a. Temperature greater than 100 degrees.
b. Vomiting more than 2 days after surgery, or inability to keep liquids down.
c. Blood loss of ¼ cup or more.
d. Excessive swelling of the breast.

Please call our office at 541- 754-1286 if there are any questions.
