Dr. Andrew Nelson is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, including cartilage restorative procedures. He specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee and elbow.

Dr. Nelson earned his bachelor of science in biomedical sciences from Auburn University, with coursework at St. Andrews University in Scotland and the University of Southern California. While at USC and Auburn he competed in swimming and water polo, with the addition of rugby during his time in Scotland. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences – COMP in California; and completed his Orthopedic residency training at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, OR, with rotations at Legacy Emmanual, OHSU, and Shriners Children’s of Portland. While in Corvallis, he helped cover multiple sports teams at Oregon State University, including soccer, basketball and baseball. He completed his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, CA, with work at the Orthopedic Specialty Institute and Newport Orthopedic Institute. During his fellowship, he assisted with on-field coverage for the Los Angeles Chargers, University of California Irvine (Baseball, Water Polo, Basketball and Volleyball), and USA Water Polo. He also completed physicals and coverage for multiple junior/community colleges and high schools, including Mater Dei and Servite.
Dr. Nelson is committed to treating patients of all ages and performance levels, with the goal of helping them return to their highest possible level of function. His treatment philosophy combines advanced surgical techniques with an individualized, team-based approach to orthopedic and sports medicine care. Non-surgical treatment modalities are also incorporated, including PT, strength training, osteopathic/chiropractic manipulation, and possible US guided injections such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
With experience in caring for professional and collegiate athletes, Dr. Nelson takes the same approach with age-group and high-school athletes. Since moving back to Oregon, he has covered numerous Friday night football games for several high schools in Salem and the surrounding communities. He currently serves as Head team physician for Corban University, and treats athletes from Western Oregon University and Willamette University as a consultant surgeon. He is also the team physician for the West Coast League (WCL) Salem Marionberries; and previously served as the MLB San Francisco Giants, single-A affiliate team physician in Salem-Keizer.
In his free time, Dr. Nelson enjoys spending time with his wife (also a surgeon and former D1 athlete) and two children, swimming, playing catch, and coaching.
