Raised in a small town just outside Savannah, Georgia, Karine’s journey into healthcare was influenced by her father’s encouragement and her sense of compassion. She embarked on her nursing career by following her brother’s footsteps and becoming a medic in the National Guard. After graduating with her RN, she moved to Atlanta, where she met her husband and went to Georgia State for graduate school. They have called Oregon home since 2015.
With over two decades of experience in the healthcare field, Karine’s passion for sleep medicine was sparked by her mother’s diagnosis of sleep apnea while she was pursuing her nursing education. Since then, she has been deeply interested in sleep-related issues and their multifaceted impact on patient’s lives. Her holistic perspective and personalized attention characterize Karine’s approach to patient care. Having encountered sleep concerns among nursing home patients, she has skillfully navigated through psychological, biological, and social factors to develop comprehensive treatment plans. As a sleep medicine nurse practitioner, Karine is committed to delivering individualized care that addresses each patient’s unique needs. She hopes patients describe her as “an advocate for their health and well-being.”
Karine’s commitment to patient-centered care is exemplified by her rewarding experiences in healthcare. Notably, her compassionate care during Hurricane Katrina as an ER tech left a lasting impact on her. Providing care to a severely dehydrated and emotionally distressed patient, she learned the profound effect that simple acts of kindness, like offering a bath, can have on a patient’s well-being.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Karine enjoys hobbies such as solving jigsaw puzzles and photography. Her creative pursuits include creating annual calendars showcasing her photographic adventures as she explores scenery in the Pacific Northwest. She also enjoys time with her year-old puppy, Willow, who likes to play after dark.
